The villages were located in remote and hard-to-reach areas, where the lack of infrastructure posed significant challenges. In these isolated communities, residents, especially women and girls, had to walk for hours daily to fetch water from rivers and other unsafe sources. This daily task not only exposed them to the dangers but also took time away from education and income-generating activities.

The reliance on unsafe water led to widespread health issues, including waterborne diseases, exacerbating the already precarious living conditions in the region.

These challenges underscored the critical need for reliable and sustainable water solutions.

A nossa solução

Mitrelli developed a simple, reliable, and sustainable water supply system, designed for easy maintenance by local technicians. The system, powered entirely by solar energy, uses analog controls to minimize maintenance needs and ensure usability.

Water was sourced from rivers, lakes, springs, and wells, treated in facilities, stored in tanks, and distributed through accessible systems. In some of the most challenging areas lacking fresh water, an innovative solar-powered desalination system was developed to provide a 24/7 water supply, with storage facilities ensuring backup during technical delays.

Âmbito
de trabalho

Mitrelli managed all aspects of the project, including surveys, design, engineering, construction, logistics, and a Fase de exploração e manutenção de 12 meses, collaborating with over 100 local suppliers.

214 water supply systems have been implemented in 9 of Angola’s provinces, serving some 430,000 people, with thousands of taps and fountains, including laundry and shower units.

Some 764 local staff were trained to assume responsibility for future system operation, ensuring long-term sustainability.

To support long-term success, community awareness campaigns taught residents how to use the new system, ensuring it improved health, sanitation, and daily life for rural populations.
