The Government plans to inaugurate the stadiums in Huambo and Uíge and the High Performance Centre in Bengo by October next year. Speaking at the end of a visit to the sports facilities in Huambo, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Rui Falcão, confirmed that the Government plans to inaugurate, by October 2025, “three large-scale sports facilities”, as part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of national independence.
The visit, which took place this Monday, began at the Huambo stadium. Work on this infrastructure has been halted for a few months, but will resume soon “after strategies are redefined with the construction company CORA”, says a statement from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, to which VerAngola had access.
On the occasion, the minister received detailed information from the contractor, who said that the works are approximately 34 percent complete, and that “at this moment, the two main stands, top and west (with two rings), have already been erected, as well as the ticket office area, bar support and offices”.
This is the largest sports facility in the province, and is being built from scratch and will have a capacity for 10,000 people.
The head of the Youth and Sports portfolio also visited the Osvaldo Serra Van-Dúnem Pavilion, which was built as part of Afro Basket 2007, at the time organized by Angola.
Here, “local authorities have presented a reasonable framework for the practice of indoor sports”, however, “the main concerns are related to the lighting, broken giant screens, the electrical system, water leaks even with the piping installed”, says the note, which recalls that this pavilion usually hosts at least five national championships per year.
Furthermore, during his field trip, the minister also visited some private sports facilities, which contribute to the promotion of sports practice in Huambo, such as the Electro do Huambo and Ferrovia sports complexes.
On that occasion, the minister said that the concern is to complete the Huambo stadium, whose deadlines must, in principle, be met.
“At this moment, the initial concern is with the completion of the Huambo Stadium, which in principle will be met within the deadlines. Then, gradually, the Government, within the framework of its responsibility for sports infrastructures, will give due treatment to the other infrastructures”, he indicated.
The note recalls that the ministry plans to inaugurate, by next year, the stadiums of Huambo, Uíge, the José Armando Sayovo High Performance Sports Center (Bengo) and also the “total recovery of the 11 de Novembro National Stadium”.
