The Mitrelli Group, the Menomadin Foundation, Save a Child’s Heart, and the Côte d’Ivoire Health Ministry, this week announced an innovative local-capacity-building initiative in Côte d’Ivoire to establish the country’s local capabilities in the field of life-saving paediatric cardiac surgery, and enable the country to become a model for self-sufficiency in this field in the continent.

Approximately 1 in every 100 babies born in the world suffers from congenital heart disease (CHD), which are structural heart anomalies that occur during pregnancy when the heart or major blood vessels fail to develop properly. CHD is the most common type of birth defect, but with advanced medical care and treatment, the chances of infants and children fully recovering from CHD and living normal adult lives are better than ever. However, in countries where the necessary treatments are unavailable, CHD is the leading cause of mortality in the first year of life.
Selon l'OMS (https://apo-opa.info/3O1Ps2F), sur 300 000 naissances enregistrées chaque année en Côte d'Ivoire, 2 700 souffrent de cardiopathies congénitales. Cependant, le taux de dépistage de ces cardiopathies congénitales est très faible (11%).
L'objectif de cette nouvelle initiative est de mettre en place un effort national pour diagnostiquer et traiter beaucoup plus d'enfants, tout en établissant conjointement l'indépendance sanitaire de la Côte d'Ivoire en matière de chirurgie cardiaque pédiatrique grâce à des connaissances et des ressources médicales avancées.
Dans le cadre de ce nouveau partenariat, qui devrait durer cinq ans, le personnel médical de l'Institut de cardiologie d'Abidjan suivra une formation avancée à diverses procédures liées au cœur, dispensée par des équipes de cardiologues français et israéliens, ce qui renforcera leurs capacités professionnelles existantes. Des délégations de chirurgiens se rendront tout au long de l'année en Côte d'Ivoire pour opérer de jeunes patients et former les équipes médicales locales. En outre, les équipes médicales de Côte d'Ivoire bénéficieront d'une formation de pointe en Israël dans différents domaines des soins cardiaques pédiatriques.
Le projet fera de la Côte d'Ivoire un modèle et un point de référence pour la chirurgie cardiaque pédiatrique en Afrique, ce qui permettra non seulement de réduire les taux de mortalité, mais aussi d'améliorer la qualité de vie des enfants. Entre-temps, les cas les plus graves et les plus urgents seront transférés en Israël pour y recevoir des soins immédiats.
L'annonce de cette initiative a été faite lors d'une réunion spéciale au ministère de la santé de Côte d'Ivoire, avec la participation de neuf enfants atteints de déficiences cardiaques, âgés de 1 à 13 ans, qui se rendront en Israël dans les prochains jours pour subir des interventions cardiaques vitales à l'hôpital pour enfants Sylvan Adams, par l'intermédiaire de Save a Child's Heart.
In 2020, during the early stages of the project, the foundation, “Children of Africa” under the patronage of First Lady Mrs. Dominique Ouattara, Mitrelli Group, Menomadin Foundation and the NGO “Save a Child’s Heart”, worked together to facilitate successful surgeries in Israel for five children suffering from cardiologic conditions.
Minister of Health of Cote d’Ivoire Mr. Pierre Dimba a parlé de l'importance de l'indépendance sanitaire en tant que stratégie du gouvernement. “Les patients souffrant de malformations cardiaques ont besoin non seulement d'une intervention chirurgicale, mais aussi d'un traitement ultérieur. Envoyer des enfants à l'étranger pour qu'ils y soient opérés est une bénédiction, mais ce n'est pas une solution à long terme. La réalisation de l'indépendance sanitaire, en particulier dans le domaine des soins cardiologiques pédiatriques, est une priorité stratégique nationale, et ce projet est le premier pas sur la voie de cet objectif vital. Notre vision est de cesser d'externaliser nos soins de santé et de commencer à exporter nos propres capacités pour aider les autres.”
Il a ajouté : “Nous sommes extrêmement satisfaits de la coopération avec nos partenaires et du traitement de nos enfants à l'hôpital pour enfants Sylvan Adams par l'intermédiaire de Save a Child's Heart. Nous sommes impatients d'établir ce modèle de santé extrêmement important et stratégique pour notre pays et nous sommes heureux de le voir servir de modèle dans toute l'Afrique”.”

The arrival of the group of nine children in Israel for lifesaving treatment at the Sylvan Adams Children’s Hospital is a major step in the implementation of this strategic initiative in partnership with the Côte d’Ivoire Health Ministry and the Institut de Cardiologie d’Abidjan. This group of children, and future groups to be treated in Israel, will complement the capacity building efforts in Côte d’Ivoire led by the Association Française du Coeur pour l’Afrique de l’Ouest (AFCAO) and the Centre Hospitalier international project that will lead to Côte d’Ivoire to becoming self-sustainable in Paediatric Cardiac Care and a Regional leader in the field.”
