Project
challenges

The COVID-19 crisis underscored the urgent need for efficient medical facilities, particularly in regions with limited hospital access. Angola faced several logistical and operational hurdles:

  • Limited flights made the import of essential hospital components and medical equipment, such as respirators, extremely challenging.
  • The absence of electricity and water in some locations complicated construction and operational readiness.
  • Shortages of skilled manpower further delayed setup, requiring innovative solutions and collaborations.

Our solution

To overcome these obstacles, Mitrelli Healthcare developed a tailored approach:

  • Rapid Import & Logistics Management – Leveraging extensive experience in international logistics, our import department ensured the timely procurement and delivery of all necessary hospital components.
  • Innovative Assembly & Deployment – Prefabricated hospital structures from a U.S.-based company were adapted to Angola’s unique requirements. These modular hospitals were designed for quick on-site assembly, making them highly efficient in emergency situations.
  • Government Collaboration – Close coordination with Angola’s authorities enabled the deployment of skilled workers and resources, mitigating labor shortages and ensuring that necessary workforce support was available.
  • Infrastructure Solutions – Due to the lack of electricity and water in certain locations, our team implemented alternative power solutions and water management systems to support the hospitals’ operations.
  • Flexible & Mobile Design – The field hospitals were engineered for mobility, meaning they could be disassembled, transported, and reassembled within days, providing an agile response to healthcare demands.

Scope
of work

The project involved the design, import, construction, and deployment of three fully operational field hospitals in Cabinda, Lunda Norte, and Cunene. Each hospital included:

  • Modular hospital units, designed for rapid on-site assembly
  • A full range of medical equipment, including ICU beds and respirators
  • Essential sanitation infrastructure such as toilets and showers
  • Power supply and water systems adapted for off-grid locations
  • Coordinated logistics to transport, assemble, and operationalize each facility

Beyond addressing the immediate COVID-19 crisis, these field hospitals contributed to Angola’s long-term healthcare resilience.
