Project
challenges

Before the development of the Luanda Science Center, Angola lacked a dedicated institution capable of fostering scientific culture at scale. Schools had limited access to interactive STEM resources, public engagement with science was low, and opportunities for hands-on experimentation were scarce. There was a critical need for a national anchor capable of inspiring young people, strengthening science literacy, and connecting the country’s educational ecosystem—from universities and laboratories to families and private-sector partners.

Our solution

Mitrelli led the creation of a transformative science hub designed to cultivate Angola’s future innovators. Built within an iconic industrial building, the CCL reimagines a historic site as a modern, interactive knowledge center.

Our solution focused on:

  • Adaptive architectural rehabilitation to preserve heritage while enabling cutting-edge science experiences
  • Designing immersive and interactive learning environments that encourage experimentation, teamwork, and creativity

  • Developing inclusive educational programs for students, teachers, families, and lifelong learners

  • Equipping a world-class Planetarium and large-format cinema for engaging exploration of space and science

  • Supporting national scientific literacy through itinerant outreach initiatives, including Science on Wheels

  • Building a flexible, future-proof ecosystem that evolves with scientific advancements and community needs

Scope
of work

  • Rehabilitation & transformation of the historic soap factory into a modern science center

  • Design and installation of interactive exhibitions, thematic halls, and experiential learning zones

  • Delivery of advanced facilities, including the Planetarium, 4D cinema/auditorium, laboratories, workshops, and maker spaces

  • Development of educational programs such as workshops, guided tours, seminars, family activities, and Science on Wheels

  • Capacity building, including training and operational support for the Center’s local professional team

  • Implementation of digital and immersive technologies to elevate learning and visitor engagement
